U13 DIVISION (2012-2013): BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

U13 is a pivotal year in a hockey player's development. This is the time when skills start to take shape, and a competitive spirit begins to ignite. This Division is designed to identify and nurture young talent, setting the stage for future hockey success.

Program Overview:

  • Program Levels: This year, the Comets U13 division will consist of AA, B, and C teams. AA will participate in the SFHL League, while our B and C teams will continue to participate in SMHA Leagues.
  • Skill Refinement: Build upon the strong foundation established in previous years, with focus on enhancing individual skills like skating, passing, and shooting.
  • Tactical Growth: Develop a deeper understanding of the game. Learn how to anticipate plays, make smart decisions, and contribute effectively to team success.
  • Physical Preparation: Prepare for the increased physicality of bantam hockey. Develop strength, endurance, and agility to excel at the next level.
  • Team Placement: Our goal is to create balanced teams that foster both individual growth and team success. Evaluations help us determine the best fit for each player.

By participating in U13, your daughter will not only showcase her abilities but also embark on an exciting journey of personal and athletic growth. We believe in creating an environment where players can thrive, learn, and develop their passion for hockey.

EVALUATION INFORMATION

What to Expect:

Our evaluations for U13 the emphasis shifts towards competitive play and game-like scenarios. Evaluators will assess your ability to perform under pressure and make sound hockey decisions. The process includes:

  • On-Ice Assessments: Players will showcase their skills and teamwork through drills, scrimmages, and bubble games. Evaluators will focus on skating, passing, puck control, shooting, and work ethic.
  • Scrimmages: Showcase your teamwork, decision-making, and overall hockey IQ in 4-on-4 scrimmages, and bubble games.
  • Groupings: To begin the evaluation process, the players will be placed in groups to try and make equal numbers for each session. This means there will be players of different levels and abilities on the ice at the same time.
  • Player Ratings: Independent evaluators will provide ratings based on on-ice performance throughout the process. The coordinator will oversee the evaluation process.

As players progress, we assess both individual skills and teamwork. Scrimmages become more competitive to prepare players for higher levels of play.

Important Information:

  • Registration: All players must be fully registered, with registration fees paid in full before participating in evaluations.
  • Equipment: Players must wear full hockey equipment, including a neck guard, for all skates. Helmets should have names removed and team stickers covered or removed. Players must wear plain or Comets socks.
  • Jerseys: Jerseys will be provided for evaluations, and this will be their evaluation number for BOTH skill skates.
  • Evaluation Dates: Stay tuned to the Comets Zone Hockey website (www.cometshockey.ca) for specific evaluation dates and times. Regrouping will occur throughout the process so please check the website for regular updates.
  • Evaluators: Players’ ratings will take place during the evaluation sessions by off-ice, independent evaluators.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: We welcome volunteers to assist with the evaluation process. Please sign up at the registration table or contact the division coordinator if interested in gate duties or other volunteer roles.

Note: You MUST report to our Comet desk before the second session to register.  This is very important to ensure you are being evaluated correctly. If your daughter is unable to attend an evaluation session, please email the coordinator.

How Parents Can Help

Parents play a crucial role in supporting their child's hockey journey. Here are some tips:

  • Encourage and Support: Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate your child's efforts, regardless of the outcome.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: Help your child understand that evaluations are a learning experience, and not every player will make the top team.
  • Focus on Development: Emphasize the importance of skill development and having fun over winning.
  • Be a Good Sportsperson: Demonstrate good sportsmanship by cheering for all players, not just your own child.
